Documenting ONAP
Documentation is a very important aspect of every product or service. Would you buy a washer machine without a user’s manual ? ;-) The presentation’s goal is to explain the importance of documenting ONAP and multiple ways how it could be done. According Wikipedia “The knowledge management is the process of creating, sharing, using and managing the knowledge and information of an organisation. It refers to a multidisciplinary approach to achieving organisational objectives by making the best use of knowledge.” We could say that with the digitalization era it is assumed that information is available for everyone at any time. How it looks with ONAP? First of all the solution is quite complex, modular, relies on multiple areas of expertise, knowledge of multiple components and APIs between them. For some developers creating code is fun but documenting it is boring/nightmare. Presentation aims at sharing some good practices of documenting the ONAP with Wiki, Jira, Orange UML open source tool EtherPlant, session recordings etc.

OOM Centralized Configuration Management
ONAP is comprised of many applications, that are (as of release 1.1) built from over 100 docker containers. Each of which requires some level of configuration. In addition, nearly every application manages its own configuration in a unique way. This has lead to duplicate configuration values across the applications and no centralized configuration. In the ONAP Operations Manager, hierarchical configuration provides the ability to override application and component level configuration, allowing ONAP to be centrally configured. In this session you will learn how this was accomplished using Kubernetes ConfigMaps, container injected environment variables and the Helm template language. AAI Abstractions & Extensibility
Relying on a fixed technology stack can cause numerous long term issues such as: * Dependence on EOL or outdated frameworks/software * Reduced agility means that more development cycles are spent retrofitting the codebase to use a new technology * Leads to maintenance problems as code is tailored to suit the idiosyncracies of a specific technology * Scalability problems Following a pattern that encourages the use of microservice abstractions provides us with the opportunity to reduce the impact that these problems impose on a development organization. This session discusses a technology stack in A&AI that uses this approach to allow for swappable graph database and underlying storage technology.

Towards a Comprehensive ONAP Operations Management Solution
Currently, ONAP Operations Manager enables deployment of ONAP components as containerized microservices using K8s. This session discusses key architectural aspects for a comprehensive ONAP operations management solution. It serves as a single platform for deployment of containerized ONAP components using K8s on VM-based and bare metal hosts. VM-based hosts provide proven HW security, especially for open source components, and a HW agnostic programming layer. It simplifies workload management by enabling deployment of containerized applications including VNFs and VM-based VNFs in the same cloud instance with secure policy controls. This session demonstrates this architecture using a multi-vendor demo where a VMware VIO 4.0 Cloud instance runs in the core data center hosting the ONAP components and vDNS VNF and a Wind River Titanium Cloud instance runs in the edge data center and hosts the vFW VNF.

Auto-Scaling Capability Support in ONAP
With the increase of rapid deployment and management of new network services within CoSPs network, the dynamic scale-in/out controls are playing a crucial role to maintain the resiliency of critical services with optimal level of performance and resource utilization while responding to the changing packet processing demand in a live network. Furthermore the 5G Network Slicing, Edge Cloud and Cloud Native use cases put an immense pressure on CoSPs network to efficiently manage the production services. In the past, the SW based controls have been introduced in VIM managers with the dynamic discovery of resources to deploy next VNF instance, but with limited control over HW resources. Using latest Redfish compliant APIs, it is possible to extend closed-loop automation capabilities from Orchestration to deployment ready HW resource. In order to use these dynamic controls, the Orchestrator must be aware of workload types and communicate the policy to the VIM Manager to maintain a closed-loop control framework. Such framework should be capable of performing these essential tasks: Mapping Telemetry events to an Action, Dispatching Actions to workload deployment flow including HW bring-up or tear-down, Updating available HW resources to inventory database. The proposed framework is a generic design which can incorporate the aforementioned tasks for managing scalable workloads in NFV Cluster.

Real Time Data Event Streaming & Processing a Critical Need for True Automation Control
Real time data event streaming and real time event processing is becoming a critical need for industry transformation. Geo-Distributed data synchronization and Edge based intelligent processing is becoming a key need as edge based influx of data is growing by leaps and bounds. Intelligently processing this data, taking control actions, pushing meaningful data upstream becomes a must. SDN and IoT transformation to help in deploying a loosely coupled easily plug and play architecture, like the asynchronous pub/sub requirements for microservices are some of the key drivers. Business use cases of edge IoT networks; social networking and ‘internet of everything’ are going to propel this edge growth. This presentation covers a proposal and related concepts with tie into tooling needed to achieve this goal. The proposed feature can enhance the ONAP platform capabilities to support emerging technologies such as IoT, 5G, etc. for building and operating cloud native applications and services.

How to Setup a Development Environment for ONAP
Open Network Automation Platform(ONAP) consists in a set of heterogeneous components from Open ECOMP and Open-O projects. Their initial setup varies from component to component, resulting in a barrier for new ONAP developers to begin contributing. ONAP on Vagrant is a project which collects setup instructions of different ONAP components and provides an automated mechanism of provisioning development environments. Having a standardized provisioning method reduces the changes to have configuration issues. After this talk, you’ll be able to create your development and start contributing to ONAP.

Model Driven Platform Policy
This 2-hour session is both presentations followed by panel discussion on how models can be used to specify platform policy. For ONAP to be truly self-service and to support adaptive model drive management and control, any Dev Operations team must be able to easily specify and validate platform level policy providing the foundation for service and resource related policies. Every company has Dev Ops requirements that share common needs, but differ in current infrastructure requirements. Having a flexible, simple information and data model that captures platform policy is necessary to support all the possible scenarios. In addition, platform-level policies must be able to integrate well and work efficiently with the service and resource level policies that evolve over their lifecycle. How can we define models that can meet the dynamic and changing needs of a policy-enabled ONAP without the time and expense of modifying software code? How can operation teams use ONAP policies to automatically respond to events and conditions, in order to reduce the time required to react while increasing overall network and service availability thereby reducing the labor and effort required to manage the complex infrastructure and services? To support self-service, how does a model-driven Policy Platform support the capabilities to administer policies and monitor policy execution, including: policy creation and editing, policy translation, policy harmonization (conflict detection/resolution), policy validation, policy activation and tracking, policy monitoring, and policy reporting? How can the ONAP community bring together the Policy Information and Data Models, the Use-Cases, Common Reference Points and exchange mechanisms that are essential to enabling a policy-based model-driven ONAP? How do Policies that were defined during on-boarding of a VNF evolve when they are consumed as part of the on-boarding and instantiation of service-level policies?

Securing ONAP Using Trusted Infrastructure Solutions
ONAP is central coordinator of end-to-end network service orchestration. Any security issues of ONAP deployment can disrupt operations in a significant way. Micro service based architecture, large number of services, scale-out of these services and possible deployment of some services at the edge could add to security challenges. Trusted infrastructure is needed - to enable secure communications among micro services with auto certificate enrolment - to keep private keys, secrets secure from adversaries and - to eliminate passwords proliferation across micro services, file systems and configuration files. This presentation discusses security challenges and potential solutions related to X.509v3 certificate enrolment, secure private key storage, secure cryptography execution, secure password storage and attestation of underlying platform/OS. It also discusses hardware technologies that help in providing root of trust for both key management and attestation. And then it discusses how ONAP can be augmented with these security solutions without disrupting the ONAP architecture.

ONAP R2 Modeling Progress - an SDC perspective
The purpose of ONAP is to be an open source software platform that delivers capabilities for the design, creation, orchestration, monitoring, and lifecycle management of VNFs and network services. A key component of ONAP architecture is the Service Design Center (SDC) that acts as both Consumer of ONAP-ready VNF data models and Provider of ONAP-ready Service data models. Data modeling may have different requirements depending on the perspective of the ONAP components. This talk will focus on the SDC perspective and how it impacts the data modeling approach, and will provide an update on the progress made to align the OpenECOMP data model to the ONAP R2 information model, gaps uncovered, and early proposals on use of TOSCA SimpleYAML v1.2, vs TOSCA NFV profile, vs new extensions. The talk also includes proposals on how to feed back enhancements into standards organizations.

ONAP Operation Enhancement
While Beijing release will be focused on making ONAP carrier grade. Ease of Operations would be presumably integral part of Beijing release strategy. We have thought about several operational aspects that are listed below and intend to present during sessions in Santa Clara. Please feel free to get in touch; happy to have short call if required to explain the rational. Look forward to have our proposal accepted. a. CBR (Configuration, Backup and Restore) Solution - This Solution Proposes to Build Vendor/Service agnostic config management platform which will enable the current ONAP Platform to support config versioning, backup and config restoration features by leveraging underlying Controller platform. This platform will also add support for config comparison which would allow to compare two different version of configuration and highlight the delta and keeps the track of changes, this would also help in debugging the configuration output in case the applied configuration is not giving expected output. b. Pre-certification Solution - This Solution Proposes to Build Vendor/Service agnostic Pre-test/Service Certification platform to enable Application/Network level validation with automated workflow, test automation engine, analytics and result dashboard for end user Device and Service Certification. This platform will automate various test for L1-L3 layer validation and L4-L7 validation and health check by leveraging controller framework before moving customer premises equipment into production or before being monitored via DCAE. c. VNF Config Flexibility - This Solution Proposes to Build Vendor Agnostic generic VBS (Velocity Builder System) based custom config engine to generate VNF/PNF Configurations which will be built on CBR platform. These Config templates will be triggered by CBR Platform based on VNF/PNF type (Input received via MSO or A&AI) via controller platform. The generic configuration will have initial/base config to establish network connectivity and global configuration for initializing VNF/PNF. The rationale behind this is to reduce Vendor dependency for VNF config templates by building vendor agnostic generic configuration engine. d. Hybrid Provisioning - This Solution Proposes to Build Vendor Agnostic generic VBS based custom configuration engine to support Legacy CPE Configurations (on Physical Network Function) which will be built on CBR platform. This Configuration templates will be triggered by CBR Platform based on CPE type (Input received via MSO or A&AI) via controller platform or direct interface thru CBR Platform. The solution is to enable hybrid support to current platform by enabling current platform to support provisioning of legacy devices. e. QoS Engine - The solution proposes to build QoS Engine to store the generic QoS policies for network function type created by SD&C during design time and provide a specific QoS policy to Network controller during execution based on customer requirements that it gets from MSO. QoS Engine will have algorithms to instantiate QoS policies for a network function based on generic QoS policies; it holds during design time. And, specific customer requirements that it gets from Network controller during execution time f. Inventory Navigator - This solution proposes to build an intuitive GUI on top of ONAP A&AI component that is easily pluggable into ONAP to provide unified view of physical and virtual objects and their relationships. This UI should provide end 2 end view of Customer to Cloud i.e. Customer à customer subscription à service Instance à VNF à VM à Physical Infra

End-to-End Model Driven VNF Lifecycle Management/Modeling
As part of the VNF SDK project, VNF modeling subproject has been focusing on establishing a consistent end-to-end approach for VNF and VNF package modeling in R2. We have identified several starting point for standardization of these models. What we need to do next is to agree on what models and/or standards are going to be applicable at what stages of the VNF lifecycle. We will start with the VNF model, as it is seen by VNF developers, inclusive of compute/storage/network hardware requirements, telemetry and policy specification, and identified how this information is ingested and trasformed into other models as part as part of VNF on-boarding (SDC), instantiation (SO/VF-C/Optimization/Policy) and operation (APPC/VFC/Optimization/Policy). We will also need to understand how policies and telemetry apply across the VNF management lifecycle, at what point they are defined, who gets to define them and how they are blended/federated with policies already provided during VNF on-boarding.

ONAP Integration Through Information and Data Modeling
Discuss a cohesive way to have a shared view of information across ONAP (and likely third party clouds) that can be used for or be input into a model driven process whereby the cost of delivering platform functionality is drastically reduced and the time to delivery is dramatically decreased. Session topics may include: The ONAP Common Information Model: The ONAP Common Information Model captures common terms, semantics, and definitions for shared information across the platform; Model Driven ONAP: Models and processes that are designed, distributed, and interpreted by the execution engine; API / Microservice Characterization: Purpose Specific Models are pruned and refactored from the ONAP Common Information Model and focus on a specific API or Microservice; Management of Information Integrity and Redundancy: Identify where information is produced and made available. An Integrated Information Strategy should identify the processes for maintaining the integrity of Information; Consistent Methodology, Tools, and Processes: Define and establish the methodology, processes, and supporting tools.

ONAP CI/CD using OOM Kubernetes
Development at ONAP occurs on the master branch. The ONAP project is therefore in need of an automated end-to-end integration sanity to declare a particular tagged build sane and working at some defined level of functionality. This tagged build would represent a snapshot of war/jar artifacts and docker images - usually a nightly or commit triggered tag. Automatically determining the status of the master master branch can be accomplished by running a continuous deployment framework after CI finishes and builds the artifacts in response to a git merge trigger callback. This presentation will go over a particular implementation of a short regression test (as opposed to a full long regression) - that exercises an extended health check and the automated subset of the vFirewall use case demo to mark a particular tagged build as good. Developers can then consume the build/pull and update their environments with only builds marked as OK (a TBD level). This CD job can also verify that a commit did not break integration with other components - as much as the sanity can provide maximum spanning coverage for. The presentation will run from triggered Jenkins jobs that deploy for example an Amazon AWS EC2 spot VM, deploy OOM, run health and the vFirewall, collect logs/results and tear down the temporary VM. The process from the Jenkins artifact creation trigger to VM teardown is between 20-60 min per trigger - depending on docker image preload. A combination of several pre-recordings and parallel live/background demos will compress the actual time to demonstrate ONAP CD in several passes. Northbound clients like the OPNFV Auto project and CNCF can also mark builds as ready to work with by subscribing to the CD result stream. In summary: Automatically deploy ONAP OOM based on git submission artifact generation Run extended healthcheck and automated parts of vFirewall E2E sanity use case Report back on whether specific tag (code, artifacts, docker image repos) is sane and ready for developer and northbound (CNCF, OPNFV) consumption By default tear down OOM deployment after testing - or keep a rolling set - up for testing, or provide saved tagged AMI for later reproduction The CD deploy will - depending on commit/merge load test 1 or more merges per CD job See redeploy sh script on https://jira.onap.org/browse/INT-120, https://jira.onap.org/browse/OOM-150 - Deployment Integration Jenkins job using OOM-K8S - to validate branch Rotating live deployments in a public lab on AWS EC2 Feeds directly into the development process, could show benefits vs Docker Compose/Vagrant Discuss https://jira.onap.org/browse/OOM-357 - CNCF CrossCloud Deployment/CI Integration with ONAP Discuss https://wiki.onap.org/display/DW/OPNFV+Integration - OPNFV Northbound client integration with ONAP Discuss results of OPNFV Plugfest - https://wiki.opnfv.org/display/EVNT/Plugfest+Planning+Page 1 week before our F2F See prototype on https://wiki.onap.org/display/DW/ONAP+on+Amazon+EC2 See Tracking Wiki at https://wiki.onap.org/display/DW/ONAP+on+Kubernetes See Tracking JIRA at https://jira.onap.org/browse/OOM-393 and https://jira.onap.org/browse/INT-120 Recommended Prerequisites: "An Introduction to the ONAP Operations Manager (OOM)" "Deploy ONAP/OOM on any Environment" Recommended Follow Up Presentations: "ONAP/OOM for Developers"

Toward Container Support as Cloud Infrastructure that Runs VNFs
Container technology is gaining momentum. Container implies lighter resource usage, more preformance faster boot time, faster scale out/in etc. Kubernetes is one of most popular Container Orchestrain Engine which is industry-wide wisdom of the experience for more than 10 years. ONAP community wants to take advantage of container technology to enjoy the achievement. This session is on how ONAP can/should adapt kubernetes. Traditionally ONAP assumes cloud infrastructure to run VNFs as VM based. Since the concepts around container is very different from VM, there are many gaps. We will show status update of the effort and discuss how kubernetes can/should fit in ONAP architecture, the relationship with other ONAP components, espcieally with Multi-cloud project. APIs for other ONAP components to consume and planned model driven API which is currently discussed and TOSCA specification.

Configuring and Controlling a Wireless Network with ONAP
This session presentation is focused on demonstrating the capabilities and benefits of using ONAP and the ONF Common Information Model to configure and control a Wireless Network consisting of microwave and millimeter wave radios from 12 different vendors. A series of PoC's were completed with SDN-C, DCAE, A&AI, and vendor-developed mediators that translated the information model to/from the radios' proprietary representations. Using ONAP to configure and control wireless network elements via an open management interface based on a common information model truly works, with a few obvious and not-so-obvious caveats.

Achieving ONAP S3P with Standardized Object Model of Multi-Clouds
Today multi cloud objects and their hierarchical relationships are modeled in a cloud-specific way creating inconsistent modeling of similar features across multi clouds. The challenge is in both data management and interoperability among ONAP components such as onboarding, policy management, orchestration, optimization etc. This presentation discusses standardized Information Models for multi cloud objects (Physical/Logical DC, Tenant, Cluster, Host, VM, Container etc.) in terms of capabilities (platform awareness etc.), resource reservation/utilization and other parameters for current and future cloud implementations. It also discusses the hierarchical relationships between those multi cloud objects. It illustrates how policy, data management and optimization frameworks can benefit from this standardization through concrete examples thus addressing the challenges of ONAP R2 & beyond.

Deep Dive into the VPP based VNFs of the vCPE Use case
ONAP Release 1 provides a Residential vCPE use case. The vBRG, vBNG, vG-MUX and vGW components of this use case are built with the VPP data plane and Honeycomb control plane software from the fd.io project. This presentation will provide an overview of the features developed to integrate with ONAP - such as closed loop support with DCAE. Followed by lessons learned during the integration with the Amsterdam release. Finally, there will be a discussion of how these VNFs provide a foundation for further development of orchestration of VNFs that take advantage of Enhanced Platform Awareness (EPA). Such as the implications of orchestrating a VNF that uses SR-IOV network interfaces and CPU pinning to achieve high network performance.

PNFs and Mixed Infrastructure Support for E2E Network Slicing
As NFV deployment expanded from central cloud to the edge, also with the trends of Cloud Native and MEC, there are increasing requirements for the NFV network support of mixed infrastructure resources, include: VMs, Containers, Bare metals, hardware accelerators (e.g. SmartNIC), dedicated PNFs etc. To enabling 5G RAN and EtE network slicing support, ONAP need the capability to be aware of the mixed infrastructure resources with generic data modelling description. Also need to extend orchestration and control capability to the PNFs and intra-cloud/CO site, to keep the consistency of network attributes and QoS guarantee of network slicing services. With the current limitation of VIM layer which mainly focus on the management and orchestration of virtual resources, limited awareness of the cloud infrastructure underneath, there are solid gaps for Service orchestration and VNF controllers to be aware of and consume the mixed cloud resources, especially when across domains. Expose the cloud infrastructure in a unified model driven way, also enrich the A&AI with an elastic, accurate, up to date infrastructure resources descriptions based on common data model template. Which can be further consumed by a cloud site/local controller to support EtE automation and hierarchical network control will achieve the agile, low latency, fast auto-scaling and other new requirements from 5G and MEC.

S3P: Scale Testing the Network Control Plane
Analyses of network controller performance are often referred to by the acronym S3P, representing scale, stability, security, and performance. Creation of a suitable test environment is often complicated by lack of available resources, inaccurate emulation of network agents, and difficulty ensuring all of the microservices in your network will scale together. Recent work investigating the scale performance of OpenDaylight controlling OpenStack Neutron networks has uncovered many issues that then led to improvements in ODL performance at scale. With OpenDaylight as the leading network controller in projects such as ONAP and OpenStack understanding the performance of the network control plane is critical to enabling performance of these platforms at scale. This talk will describe some of the complexities of network controller performance analysis, the difficulties that arise during testing of a scaled-out software defined network, and some of the findings from our recent work that can simplify the creation of a scale test environment.

PNF and Hybrid Services Support in ONAP
With concepts such as edge computing, use of NFV technologies and related management principles are now being deployed almost end to end in telecommunication networks. But for some applications there is still a need to deploy physical network functions (PNFs) or appliances even further out in the network. In this presentation we will look at options for integrating management of PNFs in a NFV-centered management and automation platform such as ONAP, supporting design, instantiation and operation of hybrid network services combining PNFs and virtual functions.

State, Context, Adaptability, and Scale for Self-Learning Closed Loop Policies
Regardless of its domains of application, the policy system at the centre of a closed loop system such as ONAP will need to have some very stringent and dissonant quality attributes. As well as ensuring that the correct policy is in the correct place at the correct time, executing policies must preserve state and yet scale and must take account of their (possibly conflicting) context and yet be adaptable. In this talk we discuss the relative importance of these quality attributes when applied to a system such as ONAP. We draw on our work in Policy to discuss how policies that hold state at run time can be scaled, and how a policy system can be engineered to be adaptable even as its state and context changes. We go on to make some suggestion on how the architecture and implementation of the ONAP policy framework can evolve to meet the S3P/Carrier grade requirements

Model driven implies a number of things from modelling the resources and services under the control of ONAP via the modelling of the interfaces between the components that comprise ONAP through to modelling directives that control all life-cycle aspects so as to enable zero-touch, fully automated operations. ONAP is not the only industry effort working with model based approaches, others are as well. This presentation will discuss what a model driven approach means for ONAP and how that relates to other industry initiatives

Progressing ONAP Testing and Integration With a "Dummy VNF"
The testing and integration of ONAP can develop quickest if the designers can do their testing locally. To have the real VNFs locally is cumbersome and requires the designers to have knowledge of the VNFs to use it for their use cases . Having a dummy VNF that can be tuned to support different ONAP use cases can accelerate testing and improve the level of End to End testing that is possible

Policy Lifecycle API
This presentation will be an introduction to the upcoming release of the Policy Lifecycle API for Beijing. The Policy Lifecycle API is being introduced to support a richer lifecycle for creating, updating, deleting, querying and deploying policy during design-time and runtime. In addition, the API will be designed and developed using ONAP RESTful API best practices. For design-time, new features will be added to support a lifecycle that mirrors current SDC functionality such as: check-in/check-out, ready for testing, submission for certification, and lastly submission for distribution. These new features will move the policy API one step closer to: 1) integration into the SDC Design-time environment, 2) ability to develop and integrate a Policy Testing/Certification platform that can support flexible environment for doing conflict detection/resolution. For run-time, new features will be added to support runtime deployment of policies that support different modes of operation such as deploying policies in different modes: active, inactive, and safe mode. Platform operations team will have the ability to easily deploy and un-deploy policies to/from the desired mode. In addition, functionality will be added to give the ability for an operations team to retire selected policies at a given date. We would like to use this session to present an overview of the Lifecycle API and garner feedback from the community on the design.

Management of Cloud Native VNFs with ONAP
Cloud Native is a term that describes the patterns of organizations, architectures and technologies that consistently, reliably and at scale take full advantage of the possibilities of the cloud to support cloud-oriented business models. In this paradigm the Cloud Native Applications are developed specifically for deployment in and being managed by cloud environments, delivering on the characteristics associated with cloud. They are container packaged, dynamically managed and micro-service oriented, resulting in better reuse, simplified and cost effective operations and improved efficiency, agility and maintainability. Virtual Network functions are taking their first steps towards Cloud Native Architecture and this poses several interesting challenges for automation platforms like ONAP. The VNFs would now be composing of several microservices each of which can be individually lifecycle managed. Container orchestration platforms like Kubernetes have powerful orchestration capabilities which would takes away most of the burden from higher level orchestrator. The Cloud Native Ecosystem has rich set of solutions for monitoring and optimizing a cloud native deployment which are becoming de-facto standards very fast. In this talk we discuss the implications of Cloud Native VNFs on ONAP and some suggestions on how should the ONAP architecture be evolved to be ready for Cloud Native VNFs.

Enabling Workloads Orchestration in Containers via Multi Cloud
Today ONAP OOM enables deployment of ONAP components as containerized microservices in a k8s cluster. On the other hand, workload deployment and orchestration in k8s clusters is expected to play an essential role in ONAP operational success. This presentation discusses an architectural vision of orchestrating workloads in container clusters via Multi Cloud. The key aspects for a comprehensive ONAP workloads orchestration are discussed, including deploying containerized workloads, e.g. VNFs [IETF NFVRG Talk], into k8s clusters on bare metal in edge cloud. ONAP Multi Cloud component serves as a single platform for deployment and orchestration of containerized workloads as well as classical VM-based workloads in true multiple infrastructures, including clouds, k8s on CaaS/cloud, k8s on bare metal, etc. It simplifies workload management and improves ONAP’s user experience.
